Power Plant Development
In 1984 Baard Generation LLC began developing and constructing power plants in the United States and Canada and has successfully developed the following projects:

Three 16 MW wood-fired QF projects in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Developed by Baard from 1984 to 1987. Commercial operation achieved in 1988. Sold by Baard in 1987.

Ethanol Development
In 1999 Baard shifted its focus from developing power plants to developing ethanol facilities with the creation of Baard Renewables LLC. Leveraging its experience in the power business, Baard was well positioned to succeed in the biofuels arena. The following projects were developed by Baard or are currently under development:

  • 88 million gallon per year ethanol facility located in Ravenna, Nebraska. Developed by Baard from 2002 to 2004. Commercial operation achieved in 2006. Sold by Baard in 2004.

  • 55 million gallon per year ethanol facility located in Coshocton, Ohio. Developed by Baard from 2003 to 2006. Sold by Baard in 2006.

Gas to Liquids
In response to an increased demand for alternative fuel sources, Baard has been involved in the commercial application of Methane Steam Reforming and Gas to Liquid (GTL) technologies deploying the Fischer-Tropsch and methanol to gasoline processes. Baard Clean Fuels LLC has developed a 53,000 barrel per day GTL facility in Wellsville, Ohio. Baard is a charter member and sponsor of the Midwest Region Carbon Sequestration Partnership managed by Battelle in Columbus, Ohio on behalf of US Department of Energy.

Oil Shale
In 2004 Baard began exploring opportunities to mine and refine oil shale in the White River basin near Vernal, Utah. Baard is in the early phases of securing lease rights to the oil shale resource and  acquiring retort technology to refine the oil shale into higher value petroleum products.
